Psychotherapy

Estimated Reading Time: 2.5 minutes.

Psychotherapy is not simply going for a walk or having a coffee with a friend who listens. This is not coaching. We don’t prescribe medication. We provide talk therapy. Psychotherapy digs down to find the place inside you where we can help you to ease the pain, gain a sense of hope, and get you unstuck. Our therapies are based on effectiveness research (does it make a difference in the real world?). Our therapies may include cognitive behavioural, mindfulness, solution-focused, psychodynamic, or meaning centred. We focus on where you need help — to find relief and get to where you want to be.

WHAT CAN I EXPECT?

Your first session will review expectations, consent, and scheduling/fees. Your therapist will spend most of this session asking about the problem you are wrestling with and what it is that brought you to this place (e.g., background, relationships, and current school/work/family). By the end of the first session you and your therapist will have discussed the goals for working together, how therapy will look in future sessions, and the number of sessions recommended to start. You will have opportunity to ask any questions you have.

After the first session, you will meet regularly (usually once weekly) to focus on the goals of therapy, using the treatment modality discussed in the first session. In each session the therapist will check-in to discuss your progress/feedback from the previous session, review homework (if relevant), and continue to work on the your issue. Therapy is supportive and non-threatening, and designed to help you gain the maximum benefit from the sessions. If something is not working, this is discussed and used for planning future sessions.

In the last one or two sessions time will be taken to summarize the work that was accomplished during the sessions as related to the goals of therapy, including your satisfaction and expectations for therapy. Time will be taken to discuss how gains during therapy can continue to help you after the sessions have ended.

WHAT TYPES OF PSYCHOTHERAPY DO YOU OFFER?

Our therapists provide effective evidence-based psychotherapies, including Cognitive Behavioral (CBT), Mindfulness, Dialectical Behavioral (DBT), Acceptance and Commitment (ACT), Interpersonal (IPT), Solution-Focused, Hypnotherapy, Guided Imagery, Depth Therapy, Humanistic, Brief Psychodynamic, and others. If you are looking for a specific type of therapy, ask our clinical intake coordinator.

Psychotherapy is a transformational process that occurs in the context of therapeutic relationship (a “connection”) between the client and the therapist. Sessions are in-person, in-office, and one-on-one with your therapist. Online/remote therapy (e.g., video-conference, telephone) is provided in some instances (e.g., illness, severe weather, long-distance travel). Unless otherwise arranged, sessions are 50 minutes in length (with remaining 10 minutes of the hour for formulation and note taking).
